Presence of rare & protected lizard found in gardens saved from development

We are delighted to announce that a colony of rare slow-worms, a legless lizard sometimes mistaken for a snake, has been discovered in gardens in Danson Road, an area recently saved from a potentially devastating development which would have destroyed the habitat of many species in this area.

You can read more about FOE: Bexley's support & involvement in this campaign in our news archives.

As part of the campaign to save the area from irreparable damage a number of residents began recording nature logs to record the presence & diversity of species in the area, which is also known to support rare stag beetles. The slow-worms were not discovered during the campaign, being elusive and hard to spot - so they could easily have been lost without anyone having known they'd been there at all.

However, many of the residents developed their interest in the local wildlife as a result of keeping logs for the campaign, and have continued the practice, which has led to the presence of the slow-worms coming to light.
